Ruth Scotch

profile

Ruth Scotch attended Boston University where she received a Master's Degree in Painting in 1988. While working towards her degree she also expanded into such related fields as Photography, Mural Painting, Assemblage, and Decoupage.

Ruth has been painting outdoor scenes - markets, cafes, beaches - for almost twenty years. "I am attracted to these locations because of the complex geometries created by light and shadow. They become colorful shapes and patterns in my compositions - contrasts of dark and light. Sometimes I concentrate on these contrasts and shapes rather than the actual objects that I am trying to depict. In this way the geometries of light are first revealed and then slowly the details of the scene emerge through the underlying patterns. This way I create the kind of spatial depth I seek in my work."

Recently, she has been drawn to portraiture, focusing on children in particular. Her goal is to move away from the more sentimental aspects involved with children's portraits, and concentrate on the emotional, psychological, and social aspects of the subject and the moment in time. "As I paint, I try to utilize the environment and space around a figure to tell the story of the person. Childhood can be a complicated journey to navigate, and these are the tales on which I wish to focus."

Her work has been exhibited in galleries throughout New England.
